There are two kinds of Mexican Jumping Beans. The ones I had in my childhood were shaped like colorful pill capsules and had a ball bearing inside of them so they would tip and flip as you moved your hand. I remember the magical feeling of watching them “jump.”

The authentic Mexican Jumping Beans are not beans at all either. They were seeds with larva inside. You put them in your hand or in the sun and they wiggle and roll around as the larva moves to get away from the heat. You can take care of them by watering and keeping them out of direct sun; the larva would turn into a moth in about two months, if they survived that long. Most children of my generation were unaware that there was a living creature inside their “beans.” They would set aside the toy and the larva would die.

This is an old drawing from a series I did in college when I was a major in Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. I love the lush surface and the line quality, I loved the process of making lines. The series had the same shapes of the thorny stick and spiral, and all that would change was the relationship that they had to one another.

Above are two artworks created by 5th grade students of mine when I was in my first teaching job as an elementary art teacher. They are handmade paper, and I love the delicate nature of the pieces; they remind me of ancient artifacts.

I was flooded by water when a pipe burst in my apartment while I was out of town, and water drenched my artwork. When I returned most of the work was destroyed. This artwork is an homage to the work that would no longer exist. I would tear it up to make other artworks.

This is from a series that was created while my father was very ill and I was in the process of making plans to go to visit him in the hospital. I started by tearing up parts of a previous work that was about chronic pain and the passage of time. Those are the large red shapes and the rectangles that have months written in them. I used to have a dream journal by my bed and I would write Dream No. 1 before going to sleep, as an indication that I was ready to remember the first dream of the night.

This is a detail of a collaboration my husband and I did together. Usually I work on the piece first, take it to a resting place, and my husband adds to it and we decide when it is complete. It started with collage and acrylic paint and was inspired by a vivid dream I had about relationships. At it’s resting place, the artwork was white paint on black, with some text. The rough image of a table was featured prominently. My husband added all of the color, working in acrylic paint and pen.

“The Sick Child,” by Gabriel Metsu is a painting I was drawn to on my visit to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam when I was twenty-three. I bought a postcard of it during my visit. In 1994 I made the artwork below it, inspired by the composition and atmosphere of “The Sick Child.”
